Early arithmetic should not be introduced hastily. Instead, the child should be given time to work with all materials. He needs to get real conception of the different numbers and their relations to each other.
Mathematics materials are designed to give the child a sound understanding of numbers and their relationship. Work is always introduced in a simple and sensorial way so that the child can see, hold and feels a number or concept and gradually be led to an abstract understanding.
In our system, we would normally count in tens. In the Montessori method, children are introduced to the decimal system. All the early sensorial materials for dimension (knobbed cylinders, pink tower, broad stairs and long rods)are in sets of ten.
Until a thorough knowledge of the units is achieved, the material is limited to ten. Once the units have been mastered, the whole decimal system is introduced. The child is taught the names of power of ten through the bead material.
Our distinctive Montessori approach embodying the prepared environment, specialized Montessori teaching materials and developmentally appropriate early childhood programmes offer a safe, supportive and culturally diverse environment for all young preschool learners.
